2019 Regular Inter-club Playoff Update #2

from Mark Harper Jr., Inter-club Captain

Tanglewood!

It was a glorious day down in Pinehurst. We were up against the number 8 seed Duplin Country Club, so we set the match up at Whispering Pines Country Club to meet half way. Duplin is in Kenansville, NC, about 45 minutes from Wilmington.

We had 5 matches going today. Tanglewood didn’t lose a single one.

In the first match we had Bones and Stephen Dunn vs Lee Ross and myself. We made the trip down to support the team and get a friendly wager against ourselves. That match was split. I would give my team the win on trash talking though. Lee was in classic form early. Now to the ones that matter:

In the first match we had Charlie Fisher and Chip Baker winning 10.5 to 7.5. Charlie had a lot of trouble finding the course (the main entrance was closed) and was flustered to start, but he doesn’t need much warm up and continued his winning ways in the interclub season. Both paired well together. Great win to start our day. Of course with Charlie and Chip they finished 3 holes of everyone else. They don’t waste much time.

The second match of the day was BJ Richardson and Eddie James. They won 9.5-8.5. Both played solid and were in a lot of holes. That is a recipe for success in the new interclub format.

The third match of the day was Brian Sainz and Kenny Davis. They won their match 10-8. Brian wasn’t happy about being the low man in the group and giving shots but answered the task shooting a 79. The captain of the other team was playing in this match, and I caught up to them on 15. He saw me and drove over and said these guys are unbeatable. Another great win.

In the final match we sent out the Blankenship brothers. They were down 1 going into hole 11 and won the match 12-6. Wow! What a finish! I was able to watch the last 5 holes of this match and they paired really well. Both played really solid. Chris shot a 73 and Stevie was 79. They made a double on 10 and shot best ball 33 on the back. They anchored team Tanglewood very well.

We won the match 42-30.

First time all year we won every match out, each player competed hard and fought to the finish. What a great day for Team Tanglewood. Was fun to have a few extra spectators as well. We capped it off with a few celebratory beers and pizza in Asheboro. Looking forward to the next round. The hardest thing about captaining our team is picking players, so many great options. Bones and I are glad to have this opportunity.

We will play the Preserve at Jordan Lake next. If you have played it and are interested please send me an email.
