On May 14th, Team Tanglewood Senior Interclub team had our first regular season match at home against Statesville CC. Statesville came in ready to play. Most of their players had come up on Monday and played a practice round, but had a totally different course today. The wind was pretty stiff all day, and according to Terry Payne and Charlie Fisher (consider the source) it was in their face all day. It was a stiff NW wind and didn\u2019t let up all day and along with a firm dry course, it made things tough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today\u2019s match was clear evidence, shots in net golf are huge. In our first match, Tanglewood fielded Todd (Fatha) Brown and Lee (LETS GO TANGLEWOOD) Ross against a couple of guys who were getting 4 and 8 shots. The guy getting 8 shots off of Todd shot a smooth 76 in all that wind. Tanglewood was down 3 at the turn and got it to even on #16. Their opponent getting 8 shots takes a par-net eagle on # 17 and his partner birdied #18 to give them a 2 up win. With the 2 points for winning the match, Stateville led early 12-8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second match had Terry Payne and Charlie Fisher paired together. This match was never really in question, but this match also proved why every point counts. They had a 4 up lead at the turn, and got it to 5 up on #16. They lost #17 and #18 for a 3 up win. With the 2 points Tanglewood led 20.5 to 19.5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third match had John Holzwarth and Kyle Smith together. In Kyle\u2019s words they brother-in -lawed it really well on the front side, while Statesville guys were struggling on the greens. They led by 4 points for several holes on the front, and made the turn with a 3 up lead. Stateville turned things around on the back 9 and whittled away at our lead until they had it tied. This match came down to 18 with Statesville having a short bogey putt, while Kyle had a 5-6 footer for bogey to halve the match. He calmly drained the putt and Tanglewood is still holding our slim lead after 3 matches. Tanglewood 30.5 to Statesville\u2019s 29.5. Too close for this captain\u2019s liking, but a lead is a lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last match had Michael Gilmore and Dave Pilley paired together. This match was close the entire round and the largest lead in the match was 2 up lead by Tanglewood. Tanglewood lead 2 up after 4 holes, and lost #6 for a 1 up lead, which Tanglewood kept at the turn. Both teams halved the first 3 holes on the back, with Dave putting one in from off the green on #12 to halve the hole. That putt proved to be huge. Statesville won #13 to tie the match and they were tied when they reached the finishing 3 holes. Dave Pilley made par on #16 for a 1 up lead. As they were coming in I\u2019m counting the points and there is an outside chance that Statesville could still pull of the upset. We had the 1 up lead going into #18, and the uphill on # 18 and the front pin placement with slick greens proved to be too much for Statesville\u2019s higher handicap guys to navigate, with 2 bogeys. Tanglewood won 2 up. Gilmore\/Pilley win and the 2 bonus points for the match win gave Tanglewood a 42.5 to 37.5 much needed home win. Our next match is May 21 at Stoney Creek. They have beat us the last 2 years there so its time to change this and take the win next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tanglewood once again proved why we have the best association in the state, if not the country. Each team played hard to get this win in very tough conditions today. We even got to spend some time with Brian Sainz today as he came out to cheer our guys on.
