2020 Club Championship

from Hugh Quinn, TGA President

Defending Champion Mark Absher made it two in a row with a birdie on the last hole to win by one over Troy Blamer in the Championship Division.

Troy began the second round with a one shot lead over Stephen Dunn and two over Mark and Chris Blankenship. Mark, Troy and Stephen were tied after #16 and it was anyone’s tournament. Coming down to the last hole, Mark hit his approach to 7’ to the back left pin. After Troy missed his birdie effort, Mark rolled in his winning putt. He finished with a two day total of 148.

In Division 1, Glenn Levine shot 72 for a two day total of 150 to beat Scott Wearn by a shot. Glenn saved par from 14’ on the last hole and Scott’s tying putt for birdie slid by the hole.

In Division 2, Chad Carter started the day with a three shot lead over Jim Williams and extended it to four shots in the final round to take 1st Gross with 161. In the Net Division, Maurice Banks outpaced runner-up Brady Rockey by shooting a two day total of 136 to earn 1st place.

There were only 3 skins out in Division 2 on Sunday, worth $50 each and they went to Chad Carter, Charlie Fisher and Mark Hartson.

There were 6 skins out in the Championship Division worth $30 each and they went to Mark Absher, Stephen Dunn, Dickie Brewer, Mark Nieters, Terry Payne and Chris Thomas. See attachment for complete results.

Most players picked up their gift cards and skin $$ but if you won something and didn’t get it today, check with a TGA Officer who can get it for you or it will be available at the next event.

Speaking of the next event: It’s our annual Hatfields vs. McCoys battle, scheduled for October 17-18. This is one of the most fun events of the year.
If you are a new member and have not played in this before, you will be assigned to one team or the other. We’ll have two days of four ball match play. More details will be coming out in a couple of weeks.

We are also working on a Par 3 tournament at the recently renovated Par 3 Course. With new diamond zoysia greens, it has been greatly improved. There are 18 holes, from 66 to 99 yards so all you need are a couple of wedges and a putter. We are planning to have this in late September/early October with options to play in the morning or late afternoon/early evening. More to come.

I would like to thank the following TGA members who lent a lot of support to this weekend’s tournament. First, Joe Brooks, our Treasurer, and Ron Morgan, handled registration on Saturday, distributing scorecards, collecting $$ and answering questions. Todd Brown, our recently crowned Senior Club Champion, and Dave Edenfield, served as spotters on Reynolds #10 on Saturday which was a big help. Steve Livingston helped with scoring on Saturday along with Dave and Joe who also distributed Skin winnings. On Sunday, Brian Nason, Rob Heflin, Jim Williams and Joe Brooks took care of scoring and skins. Thanks to Mark Harper, Jr. for the refreshments. We had two well-conditioned courses this weekend and our thanks goes to the Grounds Crew for having them in great shape for our tournament. And of course to Kitty Visintine who gets our scoring sheets ready along with the gift cards.

As you can see, it takes quite a few folks to make these events happen and the TGA is strong because of member support.

Soon, I’ll be sending out information about our needs for Officer positions next year and the election process. Please give this consideration as the TGA depends on a rotation of members assuming leadership roles in various capacities.

Thanks, Hugh
