from BJ Richardson, Interclub Co-Captain
Saturday, April 16,2022, Tanglewood played their 3rd away match for the 3rd consecutive weekend, this time at Oak Valley.
There were a few rain showers early in the morning, but the weather cleared in time for the match, leaving only windy conditions behind, and a full blue tee set-up which would produce quite the nail biter for today’s match.
The first match had Stephen Dunn, and Todd Brown going head-to-head with a pair of Oak Valley’s top guys. Dunn and Brown controlled the match for most of the day, with Stephen making four birdies and Todd making two for a best ball 66 (six under)!
Their 3 and 1 victory set Tanglewood up with a strong start.
The second match had Mark Harper Jr. and Stevie Blankenship in another even handicap match up against Oak Valley, or so we thought.
Oak Valley’s guys came out hot and had Stevie and Mark fighting hard most of the day just to keep it close! They were facing a hot putter from one of their opponents who birdied four holes on the front 9! His hot streak continued, with birdies on two of the first four holes on the back. This run had our guys down five with five to play.
On hole 14, all of that would change. A quick word of “encouragement” (used loosely) from the partisan Tanglewood crowd of spectators motivated Stevie to hole the tricky 5-foot down hill birdie, igniting the comeback. From there, Jr. then birdies 15, Stevie birdies 16, they win with pars on 17.
This flurry had our guys one down going in to the par 5 18th hole. Queue the 3 wood…. Jr. hits 3 wood, 3 wood, to give himself an eagle chance. “I only had 250 up the hill”, he says. Two putts later, our guys win the hole with birdie and secure the halve. Wow!!
The third match of the day caused a few less ulcers with Cody Mathis and David Wilson (recently groomed). David goes to work right away, using his strokes and making two net birdies on the front. Cody puts up a solid 38 and our guys are 3 up after 9. The steady play continued on the back with another 38 from Cody (who hit one driver all day by the way) and continued solid play from David, giving our guys a 4 and 3 victory. Great playing!!
The 4th match of the day had Hendrik Weichelt and John Holzwarth in the lineup. This was John’s first interclub match. Its was a tough match for our guys, with neither one of them having their best stuff. However, this didn’t stop them from putting up a good fight. They were out gunned — playing much lower handicaps, but used their strokes the best they could to keep the match close. They lost 3 and 2, but managed to get 7 points for team Tanglewood, securing our third victory in a row.
Mark Sr. and I want to thank everyone for coming out and participating even though it was a holiday weekend. Oak Valley was barely able to put a team together this weekend. This just shows our depth at Tanglewood and how many guys are willing to come out and play for our club.
We also want to thank Oak Valley for providing cold beers and drinks after the round.
All of our regular season “away” matches are over. With three regular season home matches left to play, lets keep practicing and take advantage of our lead and home course advantage and continue to better our position for the playoffs.
Thanks – BJ
