from Mark Harper Sr., Inter-club Co-Captain
On Saturday, May 7th, Tanglewood regular interclub had their first home match against Salem Glen. The weather was the star of the show today as it spit rain, cool temp, and the wind made conditions even tougher on the Championship course if that is even possible. Tanglewood came in to today’s match undefeated, and Salem Glen was looking to give us our first loss. Salem Glen played hard and stayed with Tanglewood for the first few holes, but the combination of the course conditions and Tanglewood’s stellar play, was too much for Salem Glen.
In the first match out, Stephen Dunn and Todd Brown continued their great partnership play with a 2-up win over their opponents. Dunn carded the low round of the day with an impressive 70. Every time it seemed as if Salem Glen was gaining some momentum, Dunn would make a birdie and put them back down. Dunn and Brown pair really well together and should be a strong force when the playoffs start.
In the 2nd match out Eli Kennedy and Mark “Bones” Nieters fought hard, but their opponents seem to have a horse shoe up their backside in their match. One of the Salem Glen players carded an ace on number 7. If you played the Championship course today, you knew that was almost an impossible ace, with the pin in the back left. I blame myself and BJ for their loss. Well mainly BJ because on hole 5 he gave the Salem Glen players his only two Spotted Cow beers and they proceeded to birdie #6 and then ace #7. Those 2 holes were the difference in the match. So Bones and Eli can thank him for their loss!
In the 3rd match out, Brian Sainz and Brady Rockey won 3 up. Brady Rockey shot a 75 which was stellar since he was only wearing shorts and short sleeves. To hear Brian tell it, Brady put him on his back and carried him to victory. Brady made pars on every hole he was getting a stroke on and that was really the difference in the match.
In the last match out Kyle Smith and Glenn Makitka totally dominated Salem Glen with an 8 up victory. I don’t think I have seen a larger victory than that in regular or senior interclub competition. They lost the first hole and didn’t lose another hole the entire round.
Team Tanglewood is now a perfect 4-0 and have had impressive victories in all of our matches so far. Being able to co-captain has given me some insight, and this has given me a much deeper appreciation for our association. We have only used a few players more than once so far and still have a lot of players to get into the mix in our last 2 home matches. Some of the teams in our pod struggle to find enough players and we have not even used all of the guys that have offered to help us this year. To me that is more impressive than the ace on 7 today! I think I speak for BJ when I say thanks for letting us share this experience with such a great group of guys. I am proud to be a member of the TGA, and I have made many great friends since joining the TGA. TANGLEWOOD, TANGLEWOOD, TANGLEWOOD!!!!
