2023 Super Senior Inter-club vs Rock Barn

from Hugh Quinn, Super-Senior Inter-club Captain

In another close match with our counterparts from Rock Barn GC in Conover, Team Tanglewood squeezed out a 43.5 to 36.5 points win at home today. When we last played them on May 10 at their club, they squeezed us by a score of 44 – 36 points.

Today was the Tale of a Team that knows that every point does count. With two matches won by each team, it came down to the points and fighting for every one down to the wire.

In the First Match with Dickie Brewer and Hugh Quinn, it took a hole-out eagle on #17 by one of their opponents to claim the win at 2 & 1. But Team Tanglewood birdied 18 to win the hole and only be down 1 point. Dickie and Hugh shot a better ball of 65 but that was almost offset by one of their opponents shooting 67 by himself.

In the Second Match, Jerry Johnson and Mike Utt both shot 73 for a combined better ball of 67 including birdies on 17 and 18! They were 3 points up after nine and maintained that lead throughout the back nine. A solid win.

In the Third Match, Richard Gottlieb and Mark Hartson had a very tight match. On the front nine, both teams won two holes so the match stayed even heading to the back. Rock Barn jumped ahead by 2 holes after birdieing #15 to eventually win 2&1. But Team Tanglewood made par to win #18 and only be down 1 point. All four players shot in the 70s. Richard and Mark shot a 1 under par net 69!

In the Fourth Match, Paul Meyer and Chip Baker teamed up to win BIG! After 9 holes, they were just 1 up. But addling two wins on Holes 11 and 12 and then finishing with 3 straight wins on Holes 16-18 gave them a six point advantage. They combined to shoot a 2 under par net 68! And had their opponents talking to themselves!

In three of the four matches, we won Hole #18 and the other match was tied with birdies. A strong finish gave us a solid win.

We are now 3 and 2 with one match remaining versus Oak Valley. That match was scheduled for last week but due to the rain, it was postponed until July 11.

Go Team Tanglewood!

2023 5-Club Memorial Tournament

from Mark Robson, 1st VP

TGA Golfers,

Why do we pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a set of 14-golf clubs? Every year like clockwork the 5-Club Memorial Tournament scores prove 5-clubs is all we really need. (Okay, maybe 6 if you ask the golfer who got stuck in the greenside bunker on #1 and dug himself halfway to China before calling it quits.) So the next time you’re ready to buy a set of clubs look at your 5-Club tournament results and ask yourself do you really need to spend all that money?

Money Ball Tournament
Saturday, July 22nd, 8:00 - 10:00
Reynolds Course
Team event. Postable Round. Great chance to be a hero or a goat, and a great tune-up for the Member-Guest and Club Championship Tournaments coming up in August and September.

Finally, thank you to Rob Heflin for volunteering to help with check-ins and scoring and to everyone else who helped with scoring, tournament breakdown, put away, etc. Volunteers are essential to smooth running tournaments. Please think about volunteering at one of the next tournaments – every little bit helps.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Moneyball Tournament,
