from Hugh Quinn, Captain
Yesterday (July 16th), the TGA Super Senior Interclub Team played our final match of the regular season at Rock Barn GC in Conover.
It was a blood bath for Team Tanglewood. We lost all 4 matches and the final tally was Rock Barn – 52 and Tanglewood – 28.
In the first match, Glenn Levine and Tom Birrittieri were 1 down after nine and lost #11 and #12 before winning #14. A loss on #15 pushed us to 3 down which is where we finished the match. We shot 72 and our opponents shot 67.
In the second match, Del Long and Mike Utt were in a dogfight all day. They shot 33 on the front nine and their opponents shot 32 but the match was all square after nine. Their opponents made three birdies on the back to our two birdies and we lost 1 down. Del and Mike shot 67 to their opponents 66.
In the third match, Charlie Fisher (in his first SSI match) and Gene Cox won the first hole but were 2 down after nine. The back nine was an out of body experience. One of their guys got hot, shooting 34 and we went ice cold. We tied 1 hole and lost 8 holes on the back, losing 10 down. Our opponents shot 72 to our 85.
In the final match, Sam Crawley and Rob Heflin were 3 down after 5 holes but started grinding and finished the front 1 down. On the back nine there were no holes tied. We won the first two holes, lost the next two, won the next two and lost the last 3 holes resulting in a two up win for our opponents.. Our opponents shot 79 to our 85.
Rock Barn finished with 5 & 1 record in the Pod to take first place. BR East finished second with a 4 & 2 record. We are tied for third with Maple Chase with a 3 & 3 record and the same number of points for the season – 238.5.
We still have an outside shot of making the field of 64 for the playoffs but it’s dependent on the outcome of a few matches that are being played today around the state. I’ll keep you posted.
