from Hugh Quinn, Captain
The TGA Super Senior Interclub Team went across the Yadkin River June 18th to play Bermuda Run on their East Course. We played them in our first match of the season on May 7 and lost at home by a score of 45.5 to 34.5. Avenging that loss was on our minds today but, alas, they proved too tough to beat at home. We lost by a score of 44.5 – 35.5.
Their greens had been aerated a few weeks ago but had not healed completely and were much slower and bumpy than what we usually see on BR East.
In the first match, Scott Wearn and Glenn Levine gave their opponents 4 and 5 shots respectively who then proceeded to shoot -3 on the front nine. Our guys shot -2 which was enough to square the match on the front nine. The teams tied #10 with birdies but the opponents won #11 with par and #12 with birdie and #14 with a net birdie to go 3 up. #15 was tied with pars. Scott chipped in for birdie on #16 to reduce the deficit to 2 down and Glenn had a tap in birdie on #17 to get to 1 down going to #18. The last hole ended with pars for both teams so the match finished at 11.5 for BRE and 8.5 for the TGA. BRE shot 67 and the TGA shot 68. Note: the team that wins the match gets an additional two points for a total of 20 points per match.
In the second match, Hugh Quinn and Benny Murrill gave two shots to each of their opponents and finished the front nine 1 down. #10 was tied with birdies but #11 was won with a par by the opponents. The next three holes were tied before the opponents birdied #15 to go to 3 up in the match. The last three holes were tied resulting in 12.5 points for BRE and 7.5 for the TGA. BRE shot a net 68 and the TGA shot 72.
In the third match, Donnie Holt and Mark Hartson won the second hole but lost #3 and #4. The next four holes were tied until the opponents birdied #9 to take a 2 up lead after the front. The opponents increased the lead to 3 up after #11 but Mark birdied on #12 to get back to a 2 down. The next three holes were tied but #16 was won by the opponents. The last two holes were tied so it was 12.5 for BRE and 7.5 for the TGA. BRE shot 74 and the TGA shot 76.
In the final match, Sam Crawley and Joe Crocker were giving up 6 shots to one of their opponents. After a wild front nine where only two holes were tied, BRE was 1 up. Joe birdied #10 to get the match square. Sam made par on #11 and birdie on #12 to move to 2 up in the match. BRE won #14 and the TGA won #16. The last two holes were tied and resulting in a two up win for the TGA. The TGA finished with 12 points to BRE’s 8 points. The TGA shot 76 and BRE shot 79.
The loss brings our season record to 3 & 2. We have one match remaining on July 16 at Rock Barn. We’re definitely still in the playoff hunt so we’ll go to Rock Barn with that expectation. If we win at Rock Barn, we’ll be in. If we don’t win, we’ll still be in the hunt based on # of points for the season. That’s why “Every Point Matters”.
