from Mark Harper, Jr., Captain
Guys, we traveled to Holly Ridge Golf Course Saturday June 14th to take on Twilight Golf Club in our 5th match of the season. We are currently 3 and 1. Going into this match we knew it was going to be tough as we were giving up shots in every match.
Our First match was Stevie Blankenship and Kenny Davis. They started out winning holes 2,5,6, and 8 before losing 9, 10, and 11 to hold a 1 up lead. Twilight team bounced back to win the 12th hole. Each team won 1 more hole to end that match with a 2 up victory. 12 – 8 “good guys”.
Our 2nd match was Chris Martin and Terry Payne. This match started out “all square” after the first 3 holes. Then we were able to strike first blood on hole 4. Losing hole 5 but winning 6 and losing 7 to make the turn at “all square”. On the back nine, one of the Twilight guys went nuts shooting 1 over par the back 9 and was getting 3 shots. They won 5 holes on the back 9 to our zero. We lost 13.50 to 6.50 making the total after 2 matches 21.5 to 18.5 “bad guys”.
Our 3rd match David Summers and Brady Rockey were down early losing 3 of the first 5. They were able to fight back by winning 6 and 7 to only be down 1. Then Twilights Team birdied 8 and net par the 9th to take a 3 up lead at the turn. We lost 12 but were able to win 13 and 14 to get with in 2. But Twilight’s strokes in this match were too much for our guys to overcome with them winning 3 of the last 4 holes with strokes. David and Brady both played well but were giving up 5 and 8 shots in this match with the guy getting 8 shooting a net 75.
“Bad Guys” up 35-25.
Our last match of Patrick O’Shields and Michael Gilmore had a big deficient to overcome. They started out winning hole 2 and 4, losing 5 and winning 7 and 8 to be 3 up at the turn. The come back was in reach after our guys were able to win 10, 12, 13, and 15. Twilight won 16 with a stroke, we won 17 and again (with a stroke) Twilight won 18. We won this match 6 up.
Making the final tally 41-39 bad guys. We gave it a good effort but the shots coming down the back 9 were just a little to much to over come. But Team Tanglewood represented well on the road and fought hard in every match. Keeping it close was huge for the points.
Our next match is against Sapona Country Club on June 28th at home. Will be a big match for us to get to 4-2 for the regular season and secure a playoff spot.
