from Mark Harper, Captain
In April our Senior Interclub team went to Stoney Creek for our 1st match of the season, and they handed us a spanking on their home turf, 48-32. Well today on June 19th, they had to make the drive down I-40 to play us at home.
In our first match out Todd Brown and Todd Adams had to give up 4 & 5 shots respectively to their opponents. The Todds’ played well to just be down 1 at the turn. The 2 teams traded a couple of holes, and the Todds were down 1 after 15 holes. They then rolled off 3 straight birdies and a halve on 18 to win 1 up. Todd Brown was the medalist today with a 1 under 69, and Todd Adams shot a 70. They shot a best ball 65, while their opponents fired a net 66.
The second match out had Patrick Hynes and myself paired together. Patrick struck the ball just like he always does and carried me early, while my swing was trying to come around. Patrick won the first hole with a par and then we lost #2 with a net eagle. We lost #4 to go 1 down, and then just like that, my swing and putter arrived to the party. We then had 3 birdies in the next 4 holes to take a 2 up lead. We turned with the same and got it to a 3 up lead after 13 holes. We struggled the next couple of holes with me missing a 3 footer on 16. Patrick solid ball striking kept pressure on our opponents all day and we finished with a 1 up win. Team Tanglewood had a 23-17 point lead.
The 3rd match had the infamous Lee Ross and David Summers paired together. To say they clicked well together would be an understatement. They got down early losing to a par on #1, and then pulled even with the Stoney Creek guys. Lee and David took a 2 up lead to the back 9 and then just put the hammer down. They never lost a hole on the back side and finished with a 6 up win and a 14-6 point win. In their own words, they truly clicked as partners. Maybe we birthed a couple of new brother-in-laws today. They shot a net even par 70, and were in the Stoney Creek guys heads all day.
The final match had Del Long and Michael Gilmore playing together. The front nine was a pillow fight between the 2 teams with Tanglewood down 1 at the turn. Tanglewood won #10 and halved #11 to make it a tied match. And in the same fashion as Lee and David, Del and Michal didn’t lose a hole on the back. They birdied 3 holes on the back nine and ended with a 4 up lead. They shot a net 75 in their match.
This was a bad a shellacking as I can remember in Senior Interclub. Team Tanglewood ended the day with a 50-30 point victory. This makes our record 3-2 with 1 home match left next Tuesday. The victory today should be enough with our point total to get us into the playoffs. We have Sapona next Tuesday at home for our final match, and we owe them a whooping from last week at their place.
