from Hugh Quinn, Captain
The season did have some memorable moments. In our first match of the season playing at Salem Glen in late April, we got taken to the cleaners losing 50.5 to 29.5. Their Captain said it was the best they had played in 3 years. And it ended up being their only win of the season. We won our next match vs Catawba at home by a score of 42.5 – 37.5. But then we lost to Meadowlands at home by a score of 37.5 to 42.5. Playing away for our fourth match at Catawba, we finished in a tie 40 to 40. With two matches left and a record of 1 win, 2 losses and 1 tie, we were not in the best position to make the playoffs. But then at home on June 10 against Rock Barn, we came up with a 40.5 to 39.5 win, thanks to the round of his life from Benny Murrill. He shot a 66 including a great birdie putt on the last hole! However, this came with the consequence of being an exceptional score which resulted in a four stroke reduction in his handicap for Interclub play going forward. Then in our last match of the regular season playing Meadowlands at their temporary golf home at Jamestown Park, the match was tied in points coming down to the last foursome on the last hole. But when Joe Crocker birdied #18, it secured a 40.5 to 39.5 win for Tanglewood!
As the regular season ended, this put us in second place in our 5 team pod for an automatic entry into the playoffs. Our first playoff match was against Bermuda Run East in August and we came out with a 41.5 to 38.5 win. Then onto River Run which had an undefeated regular season going 6 and 0 and also winning their first playoff match. Their Captain said that our match was their closest of the year. A small consolation however.
Thanks to the 23 players who played for our SSI Team this year!
