from Mark Harper, Captain
On Tuesday May 26th, our senior interclub had our 3rd match of the regular season at home against Stoney Creek. We had just played them the previous week at their place, and our guys were ready to avenge our loss to them at their course.
Our first match out saw Gregor Howard and Todd Adams paired together. They went back and forth on the front side and made the turn all square. They were playing the same team that myself and Hynes played the week before, and they proved to be very tough opponents, even at an away course. They played very well together on the back and held a 5 up lead after 17, but a birdie by Todd gained one point for team Tanglewood. After the first match, we were 6 points behind.
The next group out was John Kennedy and Glenn Levine paired together. The front 9 was pretty much a pillow fight, but team Tanglewood proved to be too much on the back. JK birdied 12 & 13 to give us a 2 up lead, but Stoney Creek guys won the next 2 holes to tie the match after 15. The birdie by JK on 12 was probably one of the best birdies I have ever witnessed at Tanglewood. Glenn almost aced 16 and his tap-in birdie gave us the lead again. Another tap-in birdie by JK on 18 gave Tanglewood a 2 up lead, but Tanglewood was still down by 2 points.
The 3rd match had Chris Martin and Jim Williams paired together. They played great team golf and with Williams getting 4 shots–a great help. Stoney Creek guys played very strong and with a couple birdies, held a 2 up lead after 9 holes. A birdie by Chris on 11, a net birdie by Jim on 12, and a hole winning par by Chris on 13 gave Tanglewood our first lead in this match. Stoney Creek got the match square on 14. Chris made a par on 16 to give us the lead again, and pars on 18 by Tanglewood gave us a 2 up win. After 3 matches, Tanglewood and Stoney Creek are tied.
Our fourth team out had Larry “Judge” Fine and Tanglewood newcomer Buck Roberts together. Buck proved that high handicap players have a spot interclub. He was getting 17 shots in this match, and Stoney Creek started strong winning 1 and held a 1 up lead after 4. Tanglewood won our first hole in this match on hole 6, and made the turn 1 up. Getting so many shots proved to be too much for Stoney Creek on the back. Judge birdied 11, Buck had a net birdie on 12, and they never let up from there. The rain came in really strong on 17, and they just halved 18 because of the storm, and this gave Judge and Buck a 4 up win. Tanglewood won the match 44-36.
Our record is now 2-1 with 3 matches left in June. We have used 24 different players in interclub in our first 3 matches which is a great testimony to our great association. Our next match is June 11 at Sapona. Those guys are famous for having a great home course advantage but I expect our team to have a strong showing there this year. We lost a very tight match with them there last year and I believe we will make another strong showing this year.
