from Mark Harper, Sr.-Captain
This past Thursday (May 21st) Tanglewood’s senior interclub played our second match of the season. It was an away match at Stoney Creek and it seems no matter what strategy we use at their place, they have an answer for us. For this match, I decided to try and get strokes in each match rather than give strokes. Our lineup afforded us this, but we did not capitalize on our strokes.
In the first match myself and Patrick Hynes took an early lead on hole 3 only to give it back on the next hole to a birdie. Patrick played very well, like he always does, but I went brain dead for about 5 holes, and he had to play them by himself, or it seemed that way. He hit some really great shots during that period, but with me not helping him, he had to putt defensively. We made a run on the back and got square with them on a net eagle from me on 15. Stoney Creek then birdied the next hole and won the last 2 with some great pars, and we lost 3 down.
The next match had David Summers and Tom Long paired together and despite us getting shots from them, we could not pull out a win. We got down by 3 early on the back 9, but fought hard to finish only down 1, but with another 2 point bonus for the match win Stoney Creek was in a good position.
The 3rd match had Del Long and Keith Cromer together. I think a new set of brother-in-laws for interclub may have been formed with this pairing. They took an early lead, then got down by 1, strong play from Keith on the front 9 had them making the turn with a 2 up lead. They had as much as a 4 up lead early on the back, and it looked like we had a chance to get some much needed points. But, strong play on the back by Stoney Creek had us only winning by 2 points.
The 4th match, which I felt like would be the match we could really post a big win, had Paul Meyer and David Propst together. David was getting several shots, but Stoney Creek guys played well, and it seemed like that Paul and David struggled on the same holes, and Stoney Creek won the match 3 up, for a 45.5 to 35.5 home win.
Our next match is at home this Tuesday at 10:00 against Stoney Creek again. The lineup for this match is a strong one with:
Todd Adams-Gregor Howard
John Kennedy-Glenn Levine
Chris Martin-Jim Williams
Larry Fine-Buck Roberts
The lineup for this match will also give us 24 different players, which helps us have a large roster for the playoffs. Obviously, we have to qualify, but we are Tanglewood and as the old basketball announcer used to say…the cream rises to the top!!
If you don’t have anything to do, come out Tuesday and help me monitor our matches. We need to win this match at home, because it takes 3 wins to be playoff eligible, and away wins in our pod are hard to come by.
