from Hugh Quinn, Captain
The TGA’s Super Senior Interclub Team had an Away match today, 6/3/26, vs. Catawba CC in Newton. To give you the cliff note’s version, the match ended in a tie, 40 to 40.
Now for the rest of the story… it wasn’t quite that simple.
In the first match, Scott Wearn and Hugh Quinn were quickly two down after 2 holes thanks to a net birdie by an opponent on #1 and a natural birdie on #2 by the other opponent. The match see-sawed back and forth on the front nine and Tanglewood finished one down after nine. We won #10, #13, and #15 to take a two up lead but the opponents struck back with a birdie on #16 to pull within one. #17 was tied and we went to the !8th hole with a one up lead. Hugh and one of the opponents each got a shot on #18. The pin was in the back and Hugh’s approach shot went over the green into light rough. The opponent was on the green in two with a 30’ putt. Hugh played a lob wedge, landed it barely on the green and the ball didn’t stop until it found the bottom of the hole! By all indicators, the ball would have rolled off the green if it hadn’t dropped. The opponent made a gallant effort but couldn’t hole his putt. Tanglewood won the first match 2 up.
In the second match, Richard Gottlieb and Rodie Marovich started off strong with Richard’s birdie on #1 and both making par on #2 to take a two up lead. Catawba won #5 and Tanglewood responded by winning #7 and #9 to take a three up lead heading to the back nine. Catawba won #10, #12 and #14 to draw even in the match. The final four holes were tied and the match ended in tie.
In the third match, Paul Meyer and Donnie Holt won #1 and #4 but their opponents won #5 and #6 to draw even. Donnie won #9 to take a one up lead going to the back nine. But Catawba had other plans. They won #11, #12, and #13 to go two up with 5 to play. Our guys won #15 and were still one down headed to #18. Thanks to clutch pars by both Paul and Donnie on the last hole, the match ended in a tie.
In the fourth match, Joe Crocker and Billy Sawyers won the first hole with a net birdie by Billy. Catawba won #5 and #6 to take a one up lead through nine. Joe won #11 to get the match all square. It stayed that way through #14. Catawba won #15 and #16 to take a two up lead with two to go. They tied #17 and it looked like we were going to win #18 but a Catawba player holed a challenging putt on the last hole to tie the hole and that match ended with Catawba winning 2 up.
Two tied matches and two matches won by each side by two holes ended in a 40-40 tie. All four matches were extremely close all day.
