2024 Senior Interclub AT Stoney Creek

from Brian Sainz and Mark Harper, Sr., Co-Captains

On Tuesday June 25th our Senior Interclub team traveled to Stoney Creek for our final match of the season.

Team Tanglewood needed a win to keep our slim playoff hopes alive.

Despite a valiant effort and some GREAT scores, Tanglewood fell, and perhaps for the first time in the modern era (everyone says that now…) failed to make the playoffs.

In our first match, Tommy Birrittieri and Jerry Johnson, shot a pair of 76’s to win their match 3-up. What makes it even more impressive, tho, is neither Tommy nor Jerry had ever played the course before, and as as many of you know, some holes at Stoney Creek benefit from a bit of ‘course knowledge’.

In our second match, Mark Harper Sr. and Lee Ross went back and forth with a tough pair, but fell a little short. However, Mark shot a SIZZLING HOT 73. In fact, it was SO hot he gave his opponent a mild case of heat stroke, and he had to be treated by EMS.

The heat stroke situation is a reminder for us all: With these temperatures, drink plenty of water AND something with electrolytes in it as well.

In match three, the “Long brothers” also played well, but fell to their opponents 2-down. The Longs deserve an award for their year-long commitment to the team. We’ve had trouble fielding a roster all year, but each and every match the Longs have volunteered to play if needed, and they WERE needed in nearly every match. Thanks fellas!

Rounding out the match, another Mr. Available, Charlie Fisher teamed with 2024 rookie (but he’s no real rookie) Dr. Paul Meyer in a back and forth match that ended with a loss on the final hole.

It was another fun year, and after a couple of days to reflect on the season, it doesn’t really feel as though we ‘lost’ many matches this year. Instead, we just got beat.

Right out of the gate, we had some guys throw great numbers at us, and our teams played well, but the other teams just played better.

Good luck the rest of the way to our Regular, and Super Senior Interclub teams – lets make sure Tanglewood is represented in this years playoffs!
