from Hugh Quinn, Super Senior Interclub Captain
Tanglewood hosted its first home match in the CGA Super Senior Series yesterday. Colonial CC from Thomasville visited Tanglewood Tuesday and proved to be a very tough opponent.
In the first match, our guys, Scott Wearn and Tom Birrittieri, hit a buzz saw as the Colonial team was 5 under on the front and shot 64 gross and 62 net for the day! Scott and Tommy kept it to a three down match at the end, shooting 71 and 70, respectively.
In the second match, our guys, Mike Utt and Gene Cox, also faced a Colonial Team buzz saw on the front with another 5 under par score. Fortunately they cooled down on the back. But Mike never cooled down.as he shot 32 on the front and 35 on the back for a bogey-free 67!!! He missed shooting age by a shot with a birthday coming up in a couple of months. Gene wanted to help but Mike was not leaving much room. Gene did make net birdie on the 14th hole to get the match back to all square. Then they won three of the last four holes to get a three up win.
In the third match, our guys, Mark Hartson and Chip Baker, jumped off to a two up lead after nine with natural birdies on #2 and #9. But Colonial got hot on the back and stormed back to a 2 up win. As a sidebar, Mark had what is referred to as a “Jim Williams par” on the 15th hole. He pulled his tee shot left into a mess. Could not go at the green and hit it wide right into the crepe myrtles. From there, he hit a punch shot to about 18-20’ to a back pin. His opponents were already in for par. Mark drains the putt for par!
After three matches, Team Tanglewood had won 1 match and lost 2. Points were pretty close but we needed a big win by our final pairing of Bob Oswald and Ray Brewer if we were to get a W. And did they ever deliver! They had a three up lead after the front nine. Then they really turned it up on the back with both shooting 39 to win 5 up on the back and 8 up overall! A great performance.
Final Score: Tanglewood – 43 points Colonial – 37 points.
It was a good team win for Team Tanglewood against a tough opponent. Our season record is now 1-1 and our next match is against Colonial at their course next week.
