from Hugh Quinn, Super Senior Interclub captain
Team Tanglewood lost a heartbreaker yesterday afternoon, August 24th, in our first round playoff match vs Maple Chase. The final score was 40.5 – 39.5.
At home, the team of Mike Utt and Chip Baker completely dominated their opponents winning 15-5. They shot a gross 66 and net 62. They had 8 natural birdies (with 2 on one hole). An awesome performance.
Also at home, the team of Todd Brown and Scott Wearn won by a score of 11.5 – 8.5 with a gross and net 64. They had 6 birdies and an eagle. Another great performance.
At Maple Chase, the team of Richard Gottlieb and Sam Crawley played well but natural birdies wouldn’t drop and they shot a gross 75 and net 74. They ran into stiff competition as their opponents shot a gross 74 and net 68 to win 14-6.
Also at Maple Chase, the team of Jerry Johnson and Hugh Quinn played well shooting a gross 69 and net 68 but their opponents with some incredible play shot a gross 67 and net 63 winning 13-7. Jerry and Hugh were 2 down with 3 to play and on the 7th hole (16th of day as play started on back), one of their opponents was 20 yards short of the par 4 green in two. He pulled out his putter and gave it a whack… the ball found the hole on its last roll. Jerry’s 10’ slid by the hole for the tie. Then adding insult to injury, the other opponent on the next hole, #8, skirted the green side bunker with his second shot, rolling up to 6’ where he made the eagle putt to put them ahead by 4.
It was a disheartening end to our SSI season as each of the guys gave it their best shot but we came up 1 point short.
Thanks to all who played on the SSI team this year. It was a good year but next year can be better!
Congratulations to the Regular Interclub Team and the Senior Interclub Team for winning their first round matches! Keep up the good work in the next round Team Tanglewood!
