2023 Member-Guest Tournament

from Steve Livingston, TGA President

Hello Guys,

I’m going to take a crack at the report out from this weekend. Mark Robson unfortunately tested positive for covid and couldn’t be there. I’m hearing a buzz on this, so everyone needs to be careful.

First, I want to thank all those that helped and also first, apologize for anyone I miss. I left the officers out, but you know who we are.
Dan Eldridge for cooking the delicious pork shoulders. Keith Lester for his help with the beverages
Mark Harper Sr’s wife for donating and cooking those incredible baked beans, the cole slaw, and the surprise of the night…banana pudding!
Tommy B at check-in on both days.
Our Markers…Jonathan Kiser, Dave Edenfield, Mark Hartson, and Scott Wearn
Kelly Mureness and Danielle Klock for baking cookies, handling the beverages, and the beverage cart.
Douglas Levine for helping with the beverages and the dinner set-up and tear down.

The most incredible golf highlight I’ve heard was Sam Crawley birding #15, #16, #17, and #18 on Sunday…. 11 shots….that’s some really incredible golf!!! If someone can top that, we are all ears.

I’ve heard concerns that we had an inequity with the CTP’s where we had flights 2 & 3 on the same Par 3; they had 18 teams total. There were 13 teams in the 1st Flight (blue/gold tees). The 4th flight, white tees, had 11 teams. The 5th flight, black tees, had 4 teams. We will consider using two markers the next time or coming up with a different format or something. The entry fee was the same and the payouts were the same, but in defense, there’s a lot of details to this tournament. We missed it. We should have pursued an alternative, but we really didn’t recognize it until it was pointed out. In the past year, we’ve used the approach of a “par 3-per tee group with a shoot-out hole”, so you have two chances to win. Recall last year we had signs and instructions for this new approach. There were guys coming to me that wanted to do something different than the tickets, which were great and very easy to manage. The par 3-tee group approach seemed to work fine, but we needed one more par 3 this weekend, or actually 2. We may offer a $5 refund to those in flights 2 & 3 that didn’t win. Hindsight is as always 20/20. If anyone wants to head up a small committee to plan the next Par 3 iteration, please let us know. I think this is the best way to go about it. There are pluses and minuses to each approach. Saturday – Rob Saunders (guest) won #17. Sorry but I left the list of Par 3 winners in my office (haven’t said that for a while!). On Sunday, I know Gregor put it in tight on #3. David Brooks (guest) got #16, Eric Hatfield (guest) won 11, and Mark Harper Jr won #7. We love it when our guests win.

Back to more happy stuff! We had great rounds on both days.

The Championship/First flight had two rounds in the 60’s on Sunday and 5 rounds on Sunday. I had the pleasure of sitting in the shade, drinking a beer, and watching this group hit their approaches on #9. Wow, it’s not the same game I’m used to seeing…beautiful ball flights flying to the pin. Good for you guys. Of course, it’s the putts that seem to sort things out. At least that’s what it looked like reading the body English. I did mention the shade right?

In the Championship/First flight, the teams of Jeremy Ray and his partner Nicholas Chauvenet, as well as Troy Blamer and his partner Ty Keating shot 2-day totals of 136. That’s some strong play. Jeremy and his partner ended up winning the tie-breaker via a playoff, and Troy and finished 2nd gross. Third gross went to the team of Mark Harper Jr. and Chip Bryant with a 137 total. Team Matt Bostic and Tyler Hinshaw won 1st Net. Team Stevie Blankenship and Chris Martin won 2nd net, and Chris Blankenship and Jamie Anderson won 3rd net.

From the 2nd flight, Andy and Landon Packard went low yesterday with a 61. Todd Brown and Ken Nurse won 1st Gross. Glenn and Douglas Levine won 1st Net with a strong start Saturday and a stronger finish Sunday. Handling the beer duties really seems to agree with Glenn’s already great game. It did not work for me.

From the 3rd Flight – John Holzwarth and Tim Carpenter won 1st Gross. Terry Payne and Derek Marley won 1st Net with a very strong 62 on Sunday.

From the 4th Flight – Tom Long and Hugh Martin won 1st Gross with a nice 74 and Sunday. Mark DeBush and James Miller won 1st Net with a strong 61 on Saturday and a 67 on Sunday. Great rounds guys.

5th Flight – Eddie James and JB Wilkerson won 1st Gross in a play-off with Sam Crawley and Huston Shaw. This one had far reaching implications…if Sam and his partner had won the play-off, Eddie’s team would have finished out of the money and David Orrell and Rob Saunders would have won 1st Net. Unfortunately with 4 groups we could only pay 2 places.

I didn’t list all the winners, but they are on the spreadsheet that was sent out yesterday. To view the full results, click here.

I hope your guests had a great time. It is really all about them. It’s great to get everyone together, sharing a meal, hearing everyone talking and laughing…it’s really cool. LASTLY, WELCOME BACK KRIS CARLSON!! If you didn’t know Kris’s partner, Frank Luizzo has joined us for 20 years as Kris’ partner. Really incredible.

I don’t have a list of skins. There a few that didn’t get picked up. They are in the locker. David Brown…I gave Todd yours and you Todd’s. Todd keep what I gave you, and David we owe you a second one…..I think it was $10. I wasn’t thinking it through when I filled out the scoresheets for the skins and I’m not that smart. I did get the last name right!

Guys that’s a wrap. Next up is the Club Championship and the tournaments are going to start coming pretty quick. The Hatfields and McCoys will be in early October. Tough Day is the end of October and the Tournament of Champions is in early November. Get ready.

Best regards,

Steve
