from Mark Harper, Sr.-Captain
On May 23rd, Tanglewood had their home match against Colonial Country Club. We had an away match with them last week, and Team Tanglewood won by finishing very strong on the last 3 holes in all four matches. We picked up right where they left off last week. Our teams came out firing on all cylinders early and cruised to a convincing home win.
In the first match Tanglewood had John Kennedy and Lee Ross paired together. Lee was getting 5 shots off of the other 3 players. He used them very well. He won 3 of his 5 shot holes and they cruised to the victory. They shot a combined -6 net and cruised to a 14-6 point win. JK as he is known around Tanglewood was the medalist today with a 69 on his own ball while Lee fired a smooth 73. Both of Colonial’s guys struggled to keep up with the pace Lee and JK set early. They led by 4 at the turn and won 2 more holes coming in.
The next match had long hitting Terry Payne paired with a Tanglewood newcomer Woody Park. Terry had a net birdie on #2 which gave them a lead. They kept the lead through 7 holes but Colonial won 8 to bring them back to square. On hole 12, where Terry and Woody both had a net birdie to take another 1 up lead. They kept the lead until hole 18 when Colonial birdied 18 with a great second shot. This match finished with a 10-10 tie.
In the 3rd match, the tone for this match was early and often. Jim Williams and Gene Cox won hole 1 and never looked back. They made the turn with a 4-up lead and kept pouring it on. Jim shot a 76 on his own ball, and they shot a net -3 as a team to win their match 14.5-5.5. Colonial only won 2 holes during the entire round. Tanglewood was up 38.5-21.5 at this point.
Our anchor match today had Michael Gilmore and John Holzwarth paired together. Colonial led for much of this match, until Michael Gilmore birdied 16 to bring us back even. Colonial quickly went back up with a par on 17, but that’s why we play all 18 holes. Gilmore and “Holzy” won 18 with bogeys to give Tanglewood a 10-10 half in the final match. This gave us a 48.5-31.5 victory and puts us in a great spot to qualify for the playoffs.
The points from today’s win has us with a 2-1 record and 121 points through 3 matches. We have won these matches and have not played the same players twice. My strategy is always to get as many players eligible for playoffs by playing as many players as possible in the regular season matches. Players must play a regular season match to be eligible to play in the playoffs.
We have 3 matches left in the month of June. Our next match will be a tough away match against Sapona on June 12th. Sapona has a very strong home record, but I’m confident we can go there and beat those guys.
If you are available and have any experience at Sapona, please let me know. I would like to set a roster by the end of next week if possible. You can text me or email me if you would like to play. Please remember that you must have 20 scores posted to GHIN before you are eligible to play a match in Interclub, so for those guys who are still short, work to get some rounds played and posted.
Following our away match at Sapona, our next matches will be at HOME on June 19th and June 24th. Both matches will be at 10:00.
